3 Reasons Not To Become A Life Coach

Are you considering becoming a certified life or spiritual coach? You’ve probably done your research to determine if it is the right path for you. If you desire the opportunity to help someone grow and develop into a happier person, than you already know one of the best parts of the job.

But just like anything else, there are pros and cons. Before diving into a life coaching program, you should carefully consider if the field offers you the chance to achieve all of your personal and professional goals. Sometimes an effective way to make an important decision is to look at it from a different perspective.

Below, we’ve highlighted a few of the most common reasons people decide that life coaching is not the career for them. If any of these do ring true with you, that does not necessarily mean you should not pursue a coaching career. Instead, it might mean that you have some additional work to do to position yourself for success in the field.

You Are Afraid To Create Your Own Income

If you are a seasoned entrepreneur, you may have gotten over this fear a long time ago. But for those who have never received a check that didn’t have another company’s name on it, this can be a frightening prospect.

Do you have what it takes to make money? Are your services worthy of someone’s hard-earned cash? Will you be able to support yourself as a business owner and a life coach?

If this fear paralyzes you and prevents you from getting started, you won’t achieve the success you are looking for. The reality is that even a payday as small as a couple hundred dollars can be enough to show you that it is possible and that you do have what it takes.

Plus, the skills you develop by working relentlessly to make your business work will actually make you a better life coach. You will develop the work ethic and humility required to get leads, and the tenacity to keep going when things get hard.

The fear of creating your own income only truly becomes a negative when you allow it to limit your beliefs and your self-confidence.

You Aren’t a People Person

One critical thing about being a life coach is that your entire job is centered around other people. You get on the phone for discovery sessions with the hope of signing up a new client. You have regular coaching sessions, and possibly even group sessions, discussion groups or other public speaking engagements. Your role is to act as a positive force, confidante and accountability partner for someone else.

Empathy is an important part of being a life coach because you are helping people work through some of their greatest struggles. Much of the work you are doing with clients leaves them feeling vulnerable. If you are unable to show up for your clients with compassion, patience and empathy, you will likely struggle to connect with your clients.

One way to fight against this is to carefully choose the types of clients you will work with. Perhaps you have a soft spot for helping young people find their true passion or for helping people navigate challenging relationship transitions. Determine if there is an ideal client that you have empathy for and focus your coaching practice around them.

You Have A Hesitancy Mindset

In order to help somebody else overcome their negative beliefs, you need to do the same work for yourself. Doubting yourself can impact you in any area of life, especially when it comes to your career. Overcoming this self-doubt or hesitancy mindset is one of the first things you have to do for yourself in order to forge a successful coaching career.

What causes you to doubt yourself? Do you suffer from imposter syndrome? It’s an unfortunate reality that self-doubt stops people in their tracks and prevents them from attempting anything that isn’t 100% certain.

The ironic thing is that if a client told you that self-doubt was stopping them from pursuing their dreams, you would get to work right away debunking that thought! When you are struggling with that same situation on your own, it can be debilitating.

Become a Certified Life Coach

If any of these three factors sound like familiar concerns for you, they shouldn’t necessarily stop you from pursuing a coaching career. Find a coaching mentor who can help you sort through your concerns and give you guidance on how to overcome them. After putting in some work, you may decide that coaching is not for you – and that’s ok! It’s better to determine that now so you can avoid investing your time and money in a coaching certification program.
