8 Ways To Lift Your Spirits During The Winter

It is not uncommon for people to feel gloomy during the winter months. Add in the pandemic that we’ve been living in for the last 12 months and it could be a recipe for the blues. If you are feeling as though things are beginning to weigh on you, take a look at some of our top suggestions to lift your spirits during these cold, winter days.

Stay Active or Exercise

It can be much too easy to sit on the couch all day, binging Netflix, or playing games. While lounging can be relaxing, too much can make you feel tired and unmotivated. Adding an exercise routine into your daily schedule would do wonders to lift your spirits. After all, exercising releases endorphins which give you an overall feeling of happiness. It doesn’t have to be a killer workout routine, either. Going for a light walk or practicing yoga could very well do the trick.

Meditation May Be The Key

Meditation can clear your mind and make you feel more at peace with yourself and your environment. Go to a room, or a space where you feel relaxed, and simply close your eyes. You may play relaxing music in the background or keep the room silent, that’s up to you. Focus on your breathing, inhale and exhale for five seconds at a time. Do this until you feel a calmness settling over you. Regular meditation cam clear your mind of all your worries, leaving you refreshed and feeling mentally stronger.

Keep Track of Vitamin D Levels

Whether you are trapped inside because of winter, COVID-19, or both, your Vitamin D levels may take a plunge. Typically, you get Vitamin D by being outside. Fifteen minutes in the sun is enough for the average person, but if you’re trapped at home you likely aren’t getting the proper amount. Without Vitamin D, your mood can be lowered, leading to mild or chronic depression. If you are worried about your Vitamin D levels, make sure you take the time to get outside, and then speak to your doctor.

Pick Up A Hobby

Being inside means you have more time to pursue your hobbies. Many people have taken up activities such as crochet, cross-stitch, and even coloring as these hobbies can be very relaxing. Others have even discovered their hidden talent for art, writing, or playing an instrument. It’s important to find something outside of work that you enjoy. This will give you a sense of achievement and keep your spirits up.

Stay In Touch With Loved Ones

Humans are social by nature. We need to connect with others, share interests and feel like a part of a group. When the blues hit, it can be easy to let your connections fall away. You may not feel inclined to speak to anyone for days, which can add to feelings of gloominess. Make an effort to reach out to friends and family. Today, it is very easy to hang out virtually with one another through Facetime, Skype, or Zoom.

Stay Healthy

Eating a ton of processed foods or failing to eat healthy, balanced meals can make you feel sluggish, tired and grumpy. Be sure you are drinking enough water and eating regular meals that include veggies and protein, so you know you are getting your proper nutrients.

Pamper Yourself

Splurging on yourself from time to time never hurts. Think about some simple things you could do to relax and take your mind off your daily stressors. Pick up a new book or article of clothing, schedule a weekly bath or make a massage appointment. Treating yourself with care will not only make you feel good, but it will brighten up your outlook right away!

Think Of The Positives

Instead of focusing on the negative, think of all the positive moments you experience throughout the day. If you are a visual person, go ahead and make a list. By changing your attitude and thinking positively, you can create an immediate and lasting change in your demeanor.

If you are struggling to stay cheery during the winter, put some of these tips into practice. Start by choosing one or two simple things you can add to your week, and work up from there.
